Why should Your Child learn to Code?
- Feb 07, 2016
In this modern epoch, technological innovations and changes are occurring quite frequently in huge leaps and bounds. Hence, people are expected to develop the knowledge of accessing the connected world, being anything from computers, internet, smartphones, drones etc. Seemingly, it can also be said that, “Only developing the knowledge to access modern technology” is not enough. People should know the ways to utilize this technology in a new, innovative and unusual manner. Creativity has become a key in this modern era. Thus, the necessity of coding comes into existence. Like reading and writing, coding has become a basic skill that needs to be developed in your child at an early age. Coding should now be a part of the basic education curriculum to instill and develop the sense of innovation in young minds.
Learning and memorizing facts from a book or the internet is a manner in which a certain subject can be learnt. But in this competitive world, you have to stand out from the crowd. Coding gives your child the opportunity to do that. The existence of Google has brought almost every fact within our reach. Hence, your child has to develop some skills to make himself/herself unique. And that set of skills must include one skill which is coding.
Here are some reasons why children should learn coding.
Coding can be said to be the Basic Form of Technological Literacy in this Digital World
Children are growing up in a World where smartphones, computers, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix etc. are lodged into their daily life. Even some of their toys are not exempted. They have become digital like Lego, biomorphic toys etc.
Learning how to use them is one thing. But it's another thing to understand the underlying logic. Coding enables children to understand, tweak and treat the digital world which they inhabit, better. Discovering the logic behind the working of these technologies will draw back the “enchantment” that these technologies present.
‘Digitality’ has Brought a Topsy-turvy Change in the World
Written word was the only form of communication to spread ideas all over the world in ancient days. It was believed that the ability of writing creates the ability of bringing change. Now, writing is certainly not enough. ‘Digitality’ has become another aspect of our life. A future will soon arrive where memorizing facts from text books will cease to exist. The inability to program(code) or the inability to implement minimum logical understanding will be deemed close to illiteracy. It is therefore better to make your child develop this skill at an early age. At least, impart to him the knowledge of the basics of coding in his primary education.
Your child will have the power to bring his/her ideas to life
Everyone can develop ideas. But a fortunate few can actually give them life. Developing the ability to code will give your child the platform to bring his/her ideas to life. It will also make him/her stand out from the crowd of individuals having merely some ideas, because he will possess the power of actually implementing his ideas, thereby making them a reality.
Critical thinking ability cum problem solving technique
Learning to code helps your child develop critical thinking ability. It also nurtures the development of certain problem solving techniques, depending on certain situations. It allows your child to look at the bigger concept. Your child will be able to break down bigger tasks into small, manageable ones. This is not only important in computer science or to students who want to pursue their career in software engineering, but also in other streams of life.
Young minds have more flexibility and faster grasping ability
Kids can learn anything new faster than the adults. They also find this easier because they possess an open and flexible mind. Learning to code is similar to learning a new language. Therefore, it seems like a better idea to take the advantage of this natural ability of these young minds. Coding enhances logical thinking which can be easily grasped by the kids.
Unleash your child's creative ideas
Coding showers your child with the power of creativity. They can develop their own solutions to a problem. They can also develop their own ways to tackle a particular problem. Now that's creativity unleashed.
Coding is a form of story-telling
Coding is logical, which is an aspect of story-telling. It's like story-telling. You will have to know 'what' you should write and 'why' you are writing the same. The writing should be sequential with one thing following another in a definite order.
Last but not the least, coding is fun. It gives your children the satisfaction of accomplishing something. They will not even realize that they are actually learning something while they are having so much fun. Scratch is a platform that uses an enjoyable and engaging method to make them code in a manner that does not let them feel like they are present in a class. Scratch allows the child to play games on its interface, and if he/she doesn't like an aspect of the game, he/she can modify that as per his/her choice by editing the code. He/She can find other games over there as well and modify them according to his/her preferences. There's no limit to imagination and Scratch allows children to unleash their imagination. Your child has to get himself/herself familiar to Scratch, and once enrolled into the “FIRST STEPS -CODING FUN WITH SCRATCH” course at Futurite and acquainted, he will stick to it for sure.
We sometimes do feel that some technology in our daily life is beyond our control or understanding. It will not be very nice if we leave our children ignorant of certain advanced logic, making them feel vulnerable to the mysterious forces. The best thing that we can gift our children is to develop their confidence and creativity. They may not take up coding as a profession in future but they will not be afraid of computers and will be able to understand the underlying logic or principle. Hogwarts was a castle where Harry Potter went to understand magic. That castle may not exist in the real World. But coding is something resembling magic and this is not fictitious. Why don't we enroll our children into this magical world of learning? Food for thought!
Futurite aims to bring high quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education to school students in India. Our mission is to use cutting-edge technologies such as Robotics and 3D Printing to impart a thorough grounding in STEM subjects and concepts to school students while making their learning experience fun, engaging and hands-on. Futurite has been operating in Dubai successfully (as Premier Genie) since a number of years, working with over 25 of the top international schools and teaching 1000+ students. Futurite has been founded by alumni from IIT, IIM, JU and HEC Paris.
